Eddie Howe hails Miguel Almiron after ‘massive moment’ vs Bournemouth

Newcastle United could only draw against Bournemouth on Saturday night, with Miguel Almiron rescuing a point on a really underwhelming night for Eddie Howe’s side.

The Magpies had fallen behind the first half, with Marcos Senesi scoring from a corner. It was poor defending from Howe’s men, and the Toon boss will be concerned by how similar the goal was to West Ham’s last week.

The goal summed up what was a disappointing first half for Newcastle, but it ended in celebration. A clever pass from Allan Saint-Maximin handed Sean Longstaff a chance, but his strike was saved.

However, Bournemouth stopper Neto could only palm it into Almiron’s path. The 29-year-old took the opportunity first time, and calmly found the bottom left corner.

It ended a mini goal drought for Almiron, who had not scored since the 3-0 win over Leicester. But Miggy is back on the scoresheet, and has now scored 10 goals this season.

Eddie Howe delighted with Miguel Almiron’s 10th of the season

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was very pleased with Almiron’s strike, and praised the Paraguayan for his goalscoring milestone.

“That’s a massive moment for him to reach double figures,” Howe told NUFC TV.

“I think every attacker has that in their sights. He’s deserved it. I think he’s been outstanding this year. Good performance from him today, capped off with a great finish.”

First player to hit double figures since Callum Wilson

Almiron’s goal means he extends his lead as the Magpies’ top scorer. He now has 10 goals, and his three clear of Callum Wilson with seven.

It is only the second time in his career that the £21million has hit double figures in the league. He scored 12 in his final MLS campaign for Atlanta United.

But do it in the Premier League is a big achievement, and he absolutely deserves it for the brilliant campaign he is having. There is no denying that it is his best season in a Newcastle shirt.

Almiron’s goal makes him the first Toon player to hit double figures since Callum Wilson did it in the 2020/21 campaign, when he scored 12. No one of a Newcastle persuasion got 10 goals last season, with Wilson topping the charts with just eight.

Miggy is flying this season, and hopefully he can now go on another goalscoring run like the one he had in October.
