There’s a lot to fight for at Newcastle United right now.

Despite exits from European football as well as the Carabao Cup, Newcastle still have battles to wage this season.

Not only do they play arch rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup, Eddie Howe’s side need to improve rather rapidly in pursuit of the Premier League’s top four.

Still, some of the players on the club’s books are in the backend of their careers. Though there’s little suggestion any of them are considering something as drastic as retirement, there are a few over the age of the 30.

One of those is Fabian Schar, who is seemingly planning for life when he hangs up his boots, whenever that may be.

The 32-year-old recently joined the board of directors at his hometown club of FC Wil 1900 in Switzerland.

Now, the club have speaking about Schar’s involvement.

Fabian Schar: What FC Wil 1900 have said about Newcastle star

Indeed, speaking to Swiss newspaper Blick, club president Maurice Weber talked up Schar’s involvement.

“He will work on the board of directors in the sporting area, where there’s also a sports commission with a president, sports director, CEO, head coach and assistant coach – Fabian will now join us there,” he said.

“He is a unifying figure, grew up a stone’s throw from here, brings a lot to the table in terms of sports and networking. He clarified everything with Newcastle first.”

Fabian Schar: Newcastle may replace Swiss star soon

Though Schar remains an important figure under Howe, Newcastle are seemingly on the lookout for a long-term replacement.

At 32, he cannot be expected to play every game next season too, particularly after such a punishing campaign this time around.

Over the summer, the likes of Joachim Andersen were linked but FFP issues meant the club couldn’t sign a new centre-back. More recently, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite has been touted as a target.

At some point, Schar will need replacing and it makes sense he would focus on life after football at his age.
