Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has taken up a new role as a director at Swiss club FC Wil where he was born and where his footballing career began.

After spells at FC Basel, Hoffenheim and Deportivo La Coruna, Schar has been enjoying the best period of his career at Newcastle where he is now playing Champions League football and battling at the top end of the Premier League.

The centre-back was proud to reveal his new position at FC Wil in a club statement as he prepares for the next steps after his retirement from football.

Schar prepares for life after football

At 31-years-old, the Swiss defender is starting to enter the twilight of his career, though he is still playing at the very top of his game right now and has been crucial to Newcastle’s Champions League campaign, scoring incredible goals against the likes of PSG.

Over five years on from signing for the Magpies and Schar has become something of a cult hero at Newcastle after years of disappointment and failure under the previous regime.

His manager Eddie Howe has worked wonders with the Swiss international who is now regarded as one of the most underrated defenders in the Premier League.

Schar now wants to reconnect with FC Wil, the club who first gave him a chance and have allowed him to enjoy a great career both at club level and internationally, making over 450 appearances in total with 151 of those coming in a Newcastle shirt.

In their club statement, Schar said: “FC Wil 1900 is my childhood, youth and passion club. The fact that I can now help shape the club’s strategic path is perfect preparation for life after my football career.”

Schar still has a lot to give Newcastle

While Schar may be preparing to start his new role at FC Wil, the £3m signing is still a huge part of Howe’s squad at Newcastle and the boss will not want to lose his experienced defender so soon.

Perhaps in the summer the club will look for a younger centre-back with more potential, but you’ll struggle to find a better backup in the Premier League than Schar.

One worrying factor is that Schar’s contract is set to expire in the summer so the two parties will have to come to an agreement soon if they are to extend his stay in the North East.
