Chris Sutton predicts the score between Liverpool and Newcastle United

Chris Sutton believes that Newcastle United are ‘capable’ of giving Liverpool a good game on Wednesday night.

However, it remains to be seen if they will be able to take all three points. It is well documented how poor Newcastle United’s record is away to Liverpool. The last time the Magpies won a league game at Anfield was April 1994.

Almost 31 years later, Eddie Howe’s side go in search of victory against the side they will face in the Carabao Cup final next month.

Virgil van Dijk has warned Newcastle that the atmosphere could be horrible for them to play in, as the Reds continue their charge towards the Premier League title. But for the Magpies, they are under pressure to keep pace in the race for Champions League football.

Chris Sutton predicts Liverpool vs Newcastle United

It is a fascinating game, but one that Chris Sutton does not think Newcastle United will win.

He has predicted Wednesday night’s game for BBC Sport, backing Liverpool to pick up another three points and move a step closer towards becoming Premier League champions.

“This fixture has plenty of history behind it – Liverpool’s 4-3 win at Anfield in 1996 will always be remembered as a Premier League classic,” he said.

“Newcastle come into it in good shape after a good win over Nottingham Forest, but the way Liverpool beat Manchester City was extremely impressive. It was such a mature performance by Arne Slot’s side to soak up City’s possession and be so clinical in front of goal.

“I think we know by now that Slot’s side will be hard to beat, while Newcastle are still quite up and down – they were very poor when they went to Etihad Stadium last week. They are capable of giving Liverpool a good game but I am going to say that the leaders will take the points, and carry on their title charge.

“Along with Forest striker Chris ‘The Wood Chopper’ Wood, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season, but there is only one candidate to be crowned Player of the Year.

“Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah’s numbers are extraordinary and he looks as hungry as ever. He has been relentless, and he is not done yet.”

The Newcastle United player who must stop Mohamed Salah

As Sutton says, Newcastle United are set to come up against an ‘extraordinary’ player in Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian is playing frighteningly well, boasting 25 goals and 16 assists this season. Three of those goal contributions came at St James’ Park in December, when Liverpool drew 3-3 with Newcastle.

He got two goals and an assist that night, as Lewis Hall got a close up view of the Premier League’s best player.

In truth, Hall did not play poorly that night. He actually did pretty well, yet Salah was still able to influence proceedings.

Once again it will be Hall up against Salah on Wednesday night, with the 20-year-old set for another chance to keep the Liverpool forward at bay.

He comes into the game with confidence. Hall was excellent against Nottingham Forest – arguably Newcastle’s best player alongside Lewis Miley.

Shackling Salah is a different challenge, but one that Hall will hopefully relish. He is set to start, with Hall featuring in Geordie Boot Boys’ predicted Newcastle United XI to face Liverpool.
