Chris Sutton makes Tottenham v Newcastle prediction ahead of Premier League clash today

Chris Sutton has made his prediction as Newcastle United make the trip to the capital to face Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

Both teams come into the game off the back of poor results in midweek and will be keen to get back on track in their push for European football with a win.

In his predictions for BBC Sport, Sutton could not separate these two teams but was sure that it would be an entertaining watch with lots of goals.

Newcastle’s away form has to pick up

If Newcastle are to seriously compete for a Champions League finish for the second consecutive season then their away form simply has to improve.

In seven away games Newcastle have won just once – a pretty emphatic 8-0 win, but just one win nonetheless – and have picked up just five points in total, which is one more than Luton.

Against Everton, the tiredness in the squad and lack of options from the bench really showed on the pitch, resulting in a very disappointing 3-0 defeat.

Of course their home form has been exceptional, the third best in the league with seven wins from eight which should have really been eight from eight if not for that freak result against Liverpool.

Against Tottenham, however, Sutton doesn’t think Newcastle will find their second away win of the season, but instead has predicted an open and free-flowing game with plenty of goals.

In his BBC prediction, Sutton said: “Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou needs a positive result after taking only one point from the past five games.

“But we already know he will carry on playing in the same way, which means anything can happen here.

“Newcastle’s away form has not been great recently, with just one league win on the road so far this season, but they are not going to change their approach either.

“Both teams are missing some key players through injury but neither side will just try to shut up shop. I feel like this is going to be really open, with both teams going for it… and lots of goals.”

Newcastle can capitalise on Tottenham’s collapse

After an unbeaten start to the season which had many predicting them to be in a title race, Tottenham have gone on to lose four of their last five, with the other result being a draw.

Tottenham don’t seem to have a problem finding the back of the net, scoring in every game so far this season, but they also cannot hold onto a lead to save their lives.

It’s quite remarkable really, but Tottenham have gone ahead first in all of their last fives games and yet have failed to win any of them, so the message for Newcastle should be not to panic if Spurs get on early.
