Chris Sutton is very worried about what is going on behind the scenes at Newcastle United.

The international break has been filled with drama for Newcastle United fans, despite Eddie Howe’s side not being in action.

There appears to have been major tension at St James’ Park, as the aftermath of the summer transfer window continues to play out.

Paul Mitchell deflected any blame away from himself after failing to make any major signings, while the sporting director’s comments upset those that came before him at Newcastle United.

It has been an absolute mess, amid suggestions of a civil war at the club between Howe and Mitchell. It has been soap opera stuff on Tyneside – the kind of drama that was common place during the previous regimes.

While it has been reported that Howe and Mitchell are now working together, the discourse surrounding their relationship continues.

The pundit has responded on X to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope’s recent article about the situation at Newcastle, where he noted that Darren Eales and Mitchell have played an ‘incredibly dangerous or incredibly naïve’ game with Howe.

In response to the article, Sutton wrote on X: “Fascinating read this by @CraigHope_DM on Newcastle United and the power struggle between Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell and Darren Eales… Newcastle United fans should be worried.”

The situation is a concern for fans, but I would argue that the noise surrounding the alleged discontent is more frustrating for the Toon Army.

It will no doubt frustrate Eddie Howe too, who was bombarded with questions about his relationship with Mitchell during his pre-match press conference. He would much rather talk about the football and his players.

And that is why it is vital that Newcastle United start to get it right on the pitch. In terms of results, the Magpies have had a very good start to the season. However, there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the performances.

But Newcastle are in a good place, and more improvement should hopefully result in the noise over the alleged civil war at St James’ Park dying down.

Whatever the nature of their relationship is, Howe and Mitchell are going to have to work together. At the moment, their task will be to identify what to do in January, and it has been reported that Newcastle’s priority is to sign a right winger.

Between now and the next transfer window, the actual football should take centre stage. While Sutton thinks Newcastle fans should be worried, panic will only start to settle in if the team begins to suffer on the pitch.
