Injuries have played a huge part of Newcastle United’s season.
Quite whether or not the sheer number of problems Eddie Howe has had to deal with this season is proving the sole reason for Newcastle’s relative malaise is up for debate of course but even those outside the club have noted upon it.
One of the major issues in terms of fitness this season has been Sven Botman. So good during his first season in the Premier League following a £35m move from Lille, the Dutchman has struggled this time around.
While Howe has stressed he does not want Botman singled out for criticism, he did not cover himself in glory away at Arsenal on Saturday. In fact, he was labelled “awful” by pundit Don Hutchinson on the evening, having also scored an own goal to set the Gunners on their way.
Clearly, some slack must be afforded given the 24-year-old admitted he played on through a serious injury without knowing earlier this season but few would doubt things have slowed for him of late.
Indeed, Craig Hope of the Daily Mail has noticed something.

Speaking on a video released on YouTube on Monday, Hope said: “He looks like someone at the moment who is carrying something and doesn’t necessarily feel 100%.”

Sven Botman: Newcastle see bright future for star defender
At only 24, the future is very bright for Botman, recent struggles aside.
In fact, the club are believed to see him and Alexander Isak as two of their crown jewels in the squad and will not sell either despite FFP frustrations behind the scenes. Clearly, they rate him highly.
With Jamaal Lascelles fit again, perhaps taking him out the firing line would be wise for now. Long-term, the future is so exciting for Botman but in the short-term, a rest may be the best thing for him.
Things will improve going forward. The best is yet to come.
