Newcastle United will compete in the Carabao Cup in the 2025-26 season and, for the first time ever, they will do so as reigning champions.

A lot has changed since that unforgettable day at Wembley, when Newcastle United’s decades-long wait for a trophy finally came to an end.

For one, the scorer of the winning goal is no longer with Eddie Howe’s side, as Alexander Isak got his wish to join Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

Newcastle brought in Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade to replace him, as well as signing new recruits Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale.

Every new signing will be aiming to bring more success to Newcastle and the Carabao Cup is the first trophy up for grabs in the 2025-26 season.

How Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup

Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph, their first trophy win since claiming the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969, will go down as one of the most memorable days in the club’s long history.

But the Magpies had to fight their way to Wembley first and their path was not an easy one, as they faced several top Premier League sides.

The campaign started with a penalty shoot-out victory over Nottingham Forest, before they edged past minnows AFC Wimbledon.

Chelsea were then put to the sword before a 3-1 win against Brentford set up a two-legged semi-final with Arsenal. Howe’s side were sensational in the tie, winning both legs 2-0.

Liverpool awaited in the final and Newcastle took the lead on the cusp of half-time when local hero Dan Burn craned a majestic header into the top corner.

Isak doubled the lead just after the break against his new club, which might serve to sour the memory for some fans. Federico Chiesa scored late on to make for a nail-biting closing stretch, but Newcastle held on to lift the cup.
