Newcastle lost 4-0 to Leicester last time out and head to Anfield tonight to face Liverpool.
On his Footballer’s Football Podcast for the BBC, Callum Wilson has given his verdict on Newcastle’s performance on the day, the size of the scoreline and the penalty which opened the scoring.
James Maddison went down under a challenge from Jamaal Lascelles, and Wilson said it was a soft decision which broke open the game.
“Frustrating one – you go away to a team in Leicester who you know it’s always going to be difficult no matter when you play them. But we felt at the moment they may be a little bit vulnerable, a little bit low on confidence,” said Wilson.
“Coming off a good result last weekend, we hoped it could be a bit of a springboard. It wasn’t to be. We had a dubious penalty given against us. It’s one of those – if it doesn’t get given, VAR doesn’t get involved.
“If it does get given, VAR doesn’t overturn it and it didn’t. Then it’s an uphill battle. The scoreline flattered them more than the performance.
“It’s a game we felt we could have got something out of but we have to move on now.”
The penalty was a stroke of luck which went against Newcastle and opened up a game which they were well in until that point.
Those are the breaks which sometimes happen when a team is at the bottom of the table, but Eddie Howe will be looking for a reaction tonight.
Newcastle can only keep plugging away and their season will not be defined by the next run of games against teams at the top end of the table.
