It’s been a frustrating season for Callum Wilson with injuries once again as he only recently made his return to Newcastle United after another knock.
Newcastle have very rarely seen Wilson and Alexander Isak together this season as the pair appear to be taking it in turns to visit the medical room.
Speaking in an interview after the draw against Luton, Wilson shared how playing immediately after an injury has definitely impacted him getting injured again, but that he’d happily do it for the team.
Wilson is fully committed to Newcastle despite injuries
Thanks to Isak’s similarly poor injury record this season, Wilson hasn’t really had a choice but to play a full 90 minutes in a number of games this season when Eddie Howe would ideally like to rotate the striker.
As we saw at the end of last season, having the attacking duo replace each other for the last half an hour of a game can be so effective and keeps both of them fit an healthy.
However, they’ve not had the chance to do that this season as Newcastle appear to be cursed with this one in one out rule with all of the injuries that they’ve racked up so far.
Wilson recently shared how playing 90 minutes after 90 minutes in such a short span of time in December massively impacted his next injury, but that he’s happy to do so again if the team need him.
On his injury, Wilson said: “I had a calf injury. I was out with a hamstring, then I came back into a storm of games and picked up a calf injury. You end up playing four or five 90 minutes in under two weeks, but it’s no one’s fault.
“It was the circumstances, I believe. If asked again, would I put myself forward to play every game? Sometimes, that might be to the detriment of myself, but I would not change anything.”

Newcastle need a new attacker in the summer
If there’s one thing that Newcastle will have learned from this hectic season it’s that they cannot risk going into a new campaign with the same level of depth in the squad, particularly up front.
Wilson and Isak’s injury records make them very unreliable options despite the amount of talent they both possess and it’s something that just isn’t sustainable for a full season.
Whether or not that means Wilson will be forced to leave to raise money for a new striker or if he will play more of a backup role is unclear, but a new signing is definitely needed in the next window.
It’s easier said than done but Newcastle’s recruits will already be working hard to try and find the next hidden gem who can help support Isak for the long-term future.
