Callum Wilson has reacted to Kieran Trippier’s foot injury he picked up in the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Trippier joined Wilson as a key Magpies player who is sidelined and the striker spoke about the injury blow on the Footballer’s Football Podcast.

That said, the injury is not thought to be season ending so Trippier and Wilson should be able to play together for the crunch period late on this term.

“Injuries do happen in football,” said Wilson.

“But [he’s] someone’s just come in the door and hit the ground running, being a leader around the place.

“He’s added to the voices – myself, Matt Ritchie, Fernandes – we’re all vice captains and we’ve all been out injured.

“When you lose three voices, one voice just isn’t as powerful, you need other people banging the drum and that’s what Trips was doing.

“He was supporting Jamal in the role of being a leader and to lose him is a bit of a blow. To lose him is frustrating but he will be back sooner rather than later you’d think to give us a boost in the last little push.”

The influence Trippier has had on Newcastle was clear for all to see in recent weeks and the injury is a blow at a bad time.

Newcastle are flying and this does threaten to puncture the momentum somewhat, although the feelgood factor around the club will hopefully be able to absorb it.

And if Trippier has been so important behind the scenes, he can still have that influence, pushing up standards and keeping confidence high as the weeks tick down until his return.
