The atmosphere inside St James’ Park was incredible on Sunday, as Newcastle United demolished Tottenham Hotspur.

The sound inside the the ground was incredible, as Newcastle won 6-1 against a top four rival. In the words of Mehrdad Ghodoussi, it was a ‘statement’ win.

Fans could not believe what they were seeing in the first half, with the Magpies racing into a 5-0 lead within the first 21 minutes. It was absolutely staggering.

Sadly, Eddie Howe‘s side did not continue to score at the same rate, adding just one more goal to their tally.

It was a special day inside St James’ Park, and now Callum Wilson has made an interesting observation about the atmosphere inside the ground.

Callum Wilson believes Newcastle fans were ‘shocked’

Wilson spoke about the atmosphere against Tottenham on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast.

“It was crazy,” he said.

“The atmosphere was unreal and everyone was buzzing away and cheering and stuff like that but in between the goals it was a bit eerie and weird atmosphere, a bit like it was shocked. Like it wasn’t really happening.

“It was a fascinating game, the celebrations were wild but it was like what’s going on. You couldn’t believe it.”

A pulsating afternoon against Spurs for Toon fans

While the atmosphere was electric in that opening 21 minutes, it was weird at times on Sunday. There were moments when the noise dropped, as if the Toon fans were worn out from what they had been witnessing.

Perhaps because the jeopardy was taken out of the game so early, it created what Wilson described as a ‘weird atmosphere’.

The weirdest moment was when Jacob Murphy scored his second goal. It was one of the strangest celebrations I have ever been a part of. It was as if St James’ Park had been stunned into silence, with fans in disbelief at what the 28-year-old had just done. Although Murphy has since admitted that he wasn’t surprised, boasting complete faith in his own ability.

That goal summed up the first half. It was wild. It was an incredible strike, and it also put us 3-0 up within 10 minutes. People couldn’t believe their eyes.

St James’ Park was stunned, and it something we might not witness ever again.
