Callum Wilson believes Newcastle teammate Miguel Almiron fully deserves his rich vein of form, and is ‘happy’ to see him finally playing with confidence.
The 28-year-old was named as the Magpies’ player of the month for October, which was no surprise. He scored six goals last month, including some absolute stunners. You can expect him to win the Premier League’s player of the month award, and goal of the month too.
It should be a clean sweep for Almiron, who continued his sensational run in the 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa. The Paraguayan scored Newcastle’s fourth and final goal of the afternoon, and it was the pick of the bunch.
He received it from Wilson, and Miggy’s first touch proved he had ambitions of shooting. The Toon number 24 did exactly that, scoring from distance yet again to grab his seventh goal of the season.
It’s a real joy to see Almiron playing so well and enjoying his football, after a disappointing couple of years at St James’ Park. But he’s shining now, and Wilson has expressed his delight at his teammate’s form.
Wilson explains why he’s happy for Almiron
Speaking on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson addressed the form of Almiron.
“He’s doing a madness to be fair to him,” Wilson said.
“I’m so happy for him because he’s a player who non-stop works on and off the ball.
“Before this season I think he scored like two in 40 odd games, something like that – crazy. But now he has that confidence of taking shots on wherever so he is finding the balance of shooting at the right time – he’s still not passing 100% at the right time to my disappointment.
“But he’s doing well. You give the ball to him and you get an assist!”
Miggy deserves it
When Almiron arrived at Newcastle in 2019, his smile lit up the North East. However, that smile as wide as the Tyne suddenly got smaller, and the bright lights began to dwindle.
The work rate was there, but the goals and assists weren’t. There was no end product, which is not good enough for a £21million forward.
But now Eddie Howe has got Almiron smiling, and he is the talk of the Toon once again.
While Wilson might joke that he isn’t always passing at the right time, Almiron has the confidence to do what he wants. He clearly backs his ability right now, which is something that hasn’t always been the case in black and white.
Newcastle’s number nine may have got the assist for Miggy on Saturday, but it was the winger who did all the hard work. As soon as it left his boot you knew it was going in, and Wilson got the easiest assist of his life.
Fans and players are all delighted for Almiron, and understandably so. He has always been a fan favourite, and deserves this incredible run of form. Long may it continue.
