Callum Wilson bagged eight goals for Newcastle United in April and Bruno Guimaraes says that he’s the only choice for player of the month.

It’s hard to deny that April has been a fantastic month for Callum Wilson, scoring eight goals for Newcastle and reaching 15 goals for the season – the first time a Newcastle player has managed this since 2012.

It’s no wonder then, that Bruno Guimaraes thinks the £20million former Bournemouth man is the runaway contender for player of the month.

Callum Wilson has to be in the frame for Player of the Month

Wilson was certainly happy with his April performance posting on Instagram: “April’s been fun. Bring on May” with his Brazilian teammate, Bruno, commenting underneath: “Player of the month by miles”

There aren’t many players that can say they’ve out-scored Erling Haaland this season but Wilson grabbed two more goals than the ‘Manchester City Cyborg’ in April, which, for me makes him the clear favourite for the player of the month gong.

Half of Wilson’s goals in April came from games he started on the bench

What’s even more brilliant about his goalscoring exploits in April is that half of those goals came in games when he didn’t even start. Alexander Isak has been the preferred starter throughout April with Wilson having to make-do with a place on the bench, but he’s made the most of it when he’s been on the pitch.

It wasn’t just Bruno bringing the love on Instagram, Mehrdad Ghodoussi commented as he so often does, Harrison Ashby said “What a player” and Sven Botman piled on with “POTM”. Whether Botman mean player of the match or player of the month, he was right.

Howe is spoilt for choice with two strikers in superb form, but when the two are on the pitch together Newcastle go up another level. We need another striker in the summer so that Howe has more depth and can take that risk of playing Isak and Wilson together more often.
