Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak did not give the same answer when asked who Newcastle United’s Player of the Season was.

Newcastle United enjoyed a remarkable campaign in 2024/25, winning the Carabao Cup and qualifying for the Champions League

Having done all that without making a major signing last summer is a testament to Eddie Howe’s coaching, as well as the commitment of his players.

Several Toon players were at their very best. Special mentions should go to both Guimaraes and Isak of course, while Sandro Tonali and Jacob Murphy were both brilliant for Newcastle last season

Still, when asked for their nominations on the Player of the Season, Guimaraes and Isak did not agree.

Bruno Guimaraes names Newcastle United’s Player of the Season – Alexander Isak disagrees

The club released a video of a selection of players talking to the camera and they were asked to name who they thought deserved the award.

Guimaraes, alongside Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope, selected Dan Burn

The Brazilian said: “For me, he has been massive for us.

“No words needed. I think he scored the most important goal this season. He has been great, defended well, attacked well.”

When it came to Isak, however, the striker chose Murphy and said: “He’s been so helpful for me as well.

“I think he’s taken his game to a different level this season.”

Dan Burn’s season in numbers for Newcastle United

Burn made 46 appearances across all competitions during the 2024/25 season, missing only two games.

In March, Burn’s header shook Wembley as Newcastle won the Carabao Cup, with the local hero opening the scoring against Liverpool before Howe’s side won 2-1.

No one in the Premier League last season won more aerial duels per game (4). For Newcastle, nobody made more clearances over the same period (5.4), while he also ranked within their top five for interceptions (0.7).

Murphy deserves a huge amount of credit too, but Burn is a Newcastle United legend after the goal at Wembley. Based on the statistics, he has an awful lot more to give as well.
