There have been more ups than downs at Newcastle United this season.

The 2024/25 campaign has been unforgettable, with Newcastle United winning the Carabao Cup to end their trophy drought.

Eddie Howe has cemented his status as a Newcastle United legend, winning the club’s first domestic trophy in 70 years.

Combine that with Champions League qualification and this Newcastle United squad have achieved something incredibly special.

There have been so many success stories at St James’ Park, with the Magpies enjoying their best campaign in living memory.

Three winners at Newcastle United this season

Dan Burn

The man who gave Newcastle United lift off at Wembley in March. Dan Burn opened the scoring in the Carabao Cup final, thundering home a header to set the Magpies on their way towards ending their trophy heartache.

Even without the Carabao Cup final, it has been a remarkably good season for the 33-year-old. He has been arguably Newcastle’s most consistent defender, while his form in black and white earned him his first ever England cap.

After a summer in which Newcastle relentlessly pursued Marc Guehi and failed to sign him, Burn proved yet again why he is one of Eddie Howe’s best ever signings.

Sandro Tonali

When Sandro Tonali changed position, Newcastle United’s fortunes changed. He went from being a number eight to a six, and that moment sparked a run of games that transformed the Magpies’ season.

After returning from a 10-month ban, the Italy international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders.

Given the difficulties he has had off the pitch, it has been beautiful to see Tonali become so successful on it. He wanted to repay the Newcastle United fans that showed so much faith in him, and he has done exactly that.

Jacob Murphy

Newcastle failed to sign a centre-back last summer, while they also failed to sign a right winger. That felt like an even bigger mishap given Howe’s lack of options in that department.

Arise Jacob Murphy, who has performed at such a level that no one believed was possible.

The 30-year-old’s relationship with Alexander Isak has been a key factor in the striker scoring so many goals, with Murphy proving to be an assist machine on the right of attack.

Murphy’s contributions in the final third have been huge, and he really is the biggest success story at St James’ Park this season.

Three losers at Newcastle United this season

Callum Wilson

For most of his Newcastle United career, Callum Wilson has been a reliable source of goals. When he has been fit, he has found the back of the net.

However, that is no longer the case. The £20million striker is a shadow of his former self, unable to provide Alexander Isak with the support that he needs.

Wilson has not scored a single Premier League goal all season, as he gets set to leave St James’ Park when his contract expires.

Odysseas Vlachodimos

Newcastle United spent £20million on Odysseas Vlachodimos, who ends the season with just one appearance. That was in the Carabao Cup, with Vlachodimos coming on for the second half of the third round victory over Wimbledon.

While he played his part in the Magpies ending their trophy drought, his move to Tyneside has been a disaster. It was only done for PSR reasons, with Vlachodimos spending most of the season not even in the Newcastle United squad.

The last time that the 31-year-old was in the Newcastle United squad was the 4-1 defeat against Bournemouth in January.

Sean Longstaff

At the start of the season, an argument was still being made that the Newcastle United midfield needed Sean Longstaff to function.

Fast forward to the end of the campaign and the local lad is suddenly an afterthought.

Longstaff has gone from being an Eddie Howe regular to struggling to get off the bench. His last Premier League start was in December, with Lewis Miley above him in the pecking order now.

He is another player whose Toon career could come to an end this summer, with Newcastle willing to sell Longstaff.
