Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes to the Premier League goal of the month award.
The duo were nominated alongside Reece James, Cucho Hernandez, Gabriel Martinelli, Ruben Neves, Kai Havertz and Timothy Castagne.
There were some excellent goals scored in March, but Guimaraes felt like a favourite for the award. His first Toon goal was an absolute thing of beauty.
The Brazil international produced a backheel volley against Southampton, netting the winner on his first start in a Newcastle shirt. It was a magical goal that will be remembered for years to come.
However, it hasn’t been deemed the best Premier League goal scored last month.
Cristiano Ronaldo robs goal of the month from Bruno Guimaraes
Instead, the award has gone to Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. The 37-year-old netted a hat-trick in Man United’s 3-2 win over Tottenham, and his first goal won him the honour of goal of the month.
In fairness to Ronaldo, it was a wonderful goal. A neat flick from Fred fell into Ronaldo’s path, who cannoned an effort from distance into the top corner past Hugo Lloris. It was certainly a screamer.
But was it better than Bruno’s? How often do you see a goal like Ronaldo’s? Pretty much every other week we see a rocket from outside the box.
In contrast, I couldn’t tell you the last time I saw a backheel volley be attempted, never mind go in.
It’s disappointment for Guimaraes, but joy for Ronaldo – who I am sure is delighted at another individual honour.
