Brighton defender Adam Webster unlikely to face Newcastle says Graham Potter

Dan Burn wasn’t the only Brighton centre-back that Newcastle were courting in the January transfer window – Adam Webster was also on our radar.

According to Sun reporter Alan Nixon, Newcastle made an enquiry for Webster, but a move failed to materialise.

Unlike our enquiry for Webster, the pursuit of Burn proved successful. Luckily we were aided by his desire to play for his boyhood club.

But as Burn looks set to face his former side on Saturday, it doesn’t look he will be pitting his wits against his former centre-back partner.

The defender has missed the Seagulls’ home defeats to Burnley and Aston Villa due to a groin issue.

Brighton boss Graham Potter has revealed that Webster is “unlikely” to return for the long trip up north on Saturday.

Speaking via the Argus, Potter said: “Adam Webster has had a little bit of a setback with his injury so we will see how he goes this week.

“It’s looking unlikely for Newcastle.”

Potter is also uncertain whether Adam Lallana, who also missed out against Villa, will be fit enough to return to play a part against Eddie Howe’s side.

Potter added: “Lallana just felt his hamstring in the week so we will see how he goes for Newcastle.

“It was okay, a small one, but enough to miss this game.”

The clash at St James’ Park sees both teams come into the game with contrasting fortunes.

While Howe’s men are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games, Potter’s Seagulls come into the clash on the back of three straight defeats and no goals scored.

The two sides met at the Amex back in November, drawing 1-1. It was the final game of Graeme Jones’ tenure, with Eddie Howe watching on in the stands.

Isaac Hayden secured a point for the Toon Army after Leandro Trossard gave the hosts a first half lead via the penalty spot.

However, it would have been all three points had Callum Wilson not been cynically wiped out when he was through on goal.
