Bruno Guimaraes turned 26 on Thursday, but the Newcastle United midfielder’s birthday did not have a happy conclusion.
The Newcastle superstar was in action for his country, named in the starting XI for Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Colombia. Toon teammate Joelinton was on the bench, but was an unused substitute.
It was the first of two tough games for the Selecao, who are now going to face world champions Argentina in their next fixture.
That is arguably the biggest game in international football, and now Brazil and Bruno Guimaraes will be under even more pressure after the result on Thursday night.
Brazil were beaten 2-1 by Colombia, despite taking the lead thanks to Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli. But Brazil could not hold on, with a Luis Diaz brace completing a dramatic comeback. Given what he has had to deal with as of late, there could not have been a more popular goalscorer.
But for Bruno and co, it was a miserable night, as they struggle without their talisman Neymar.
Brazilian media deliver verdict on Bruno Guimaraes
The defeat to Colombia leaves Brazil down in fifth in the CONMEBOL qualifying table, with the top six qualifying for the 2026 World Cup finals.
There were some poor performances from Brazil, with Globo Esporte giving their player ratings after the defeat.
Bruno Guimaraes got a score of 5.5 out of 10, with only Gabriel, Marquinhos, Emerson Royal and Renan Lodi getting a lower score.
On Bruno, they wrote: “There were good and bad times. He was disarmed a few times in the defensive field and allowed good arrivals from Colombia. On the other hand, he also distributed quality passes and shots and almost managed to score with a shot from outside the area, at 4 minutes into the second half.”

Newcastle need Bruno to avoid injury
It was a mixed bag from Bruno, who must now prepare to face Argentina before then turning his attention back to his club responsibilities.
Newcastle need him to return with no injury concerns, as he is eligible to play for the Magpies once again after suspension.
He missed the defeat to Bournemouth, and his absence in midfield was certainly felt.
But he will return to the starting lineup against Chelsea on November 25th – unless Newcastle’s injury curse strikes him down as well.
