It is back to back wins for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and Brazil.

The 26-year-old came off the bench to help Brazil beat Chile on Thursday night, with Bruno Guimaraes praised for his second half appearance.

Bruno Guimaraes had been dropped from the Brazil starting XI, but won his place back for the Selecao’s second game of the international break.

The Newcastle United captain was named in midfield for the home game against Peru, and it ended in an emphatic victory for Bruno and co.

Brazil won 4-0, with two goals from Raphinha, one from Andreas Pereira and one from Luiz Henrique.

The result means that Brazil have picked up six points during this international break, and have very much got their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track. Dorival Junior’s side are now fourth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying standings, with the top six automatically qualifying for the 2026 tournament.

It was an emphatic win for Brazil over Peru, and it came on Bruno’s return to the starting lineup. He played 79 minutes, before being replaced by Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Andre.

The 26-year-old did well off the bench against Chile, setting up the late winner. But this time he was influential from minute one, with Bruno putting in an excellent performance.

He played a key role in Brazil’s third goal, fizzing a ball out wide into Luiz Henrique, who went on to provide the assist for Pereira’s impressive volley.

Media praise Bruno for his performance in Brazil win

It was a great night for Brazil, who have not been at their best in recent months. And it was a great night for Bruno, who justified why he should always be starting for his country.

Brazilian website Globo Esporte were certainly impressed with Bruno, giving him a score of seven after his performance against Peru. Only Raphinha and Henrique got higher marks.

On Bruno, Globo wrote: “He played an important role in helping the defenders to get the ball out. As time went by, he and Gerson adjusted their exits to occupy spaces closer to the area, even though the starting point was clearly with the two lined up side by side. In the final stretch of the first half, he moved the action more vertically and created good plays, such as when he left Rodrygo in a position to finish inside the area. He provided important dynamics in the second half and stretched the ball for Luiz Henrique to make the play that resulted in the third goal.”

Newcastle’s number 39 also got a rating of 7/10 from Goal, who wrote: “Up for all of the dirty work in midfield. Won 100 percent of his ground duels and probably got away with a few, too.”

Bruno finding his form ahead of Newcastle vs Brighton

Now the international break is over, as Bruno prepares for the long journey back to Tyneside.

It will be a quick turnaround for the midfielder, as Newcastle prepare to face Brighton at St James’ Park on Saturday.

While the travel will be tough to deal with, Bruno should now be full of confidence going into the game against the Seagulls.

Despite joining the leadership group and being given the captaincy, it has not been an amazing start to the season for Bruno.

There have been the usual moments of brilliance, but he has struggled to consistently perform at a level we know he is capable of.

Eddie Howe recently called on Bruno to get back to his best, admitting that his form has suffered due to not having a proper pre-season.

Now Bruno is building up his sharpness, and his game appears to be in a good place coming out of the international break. That will delight the Newcastle United manager, who will almost certainly name Bruno in his starting XI on Saturday.
