Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes edged closer towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with Brazil on Thursday night.
It was a busy evening for Newcastle United internationals on Thursday. Lewis Hall made his England debut, while he was joined on the pitch by Toon teammates Anthony Gordon and Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Elsewhere, Sandro Tonali was praised after scoring his first ever goal for Italy in a 1-0 Nations League win over Belgium.
Meanwhile, Tonali’s fellow Newcastle United midfielder was competing in a World Cup qualifier in South America.
Brazil draw with Venezuela

Bruno Guimaraes started for Brazil as they drew 1-1 away to Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier.
The Selecao had taken the lead after a wonderful free-kick by Raphinha, but were pegged back by an equaliser from Tedasco Segovia.
Bruno played 82 minutes, with the Newcastle United captain coming off to be replaced by Gabriel Martinelli, as Brazil went in search of a winner.
A winner did not come, and the result leaves Brazil third in the CONMEBOL rankings. The top six teams will automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with Bruno and co on course to book their place in the tournament.
How Bruno Guimaraes played for Brazil
Brazil have struggled at times as of late, while Bruno recently found himself out of the starting XI.
But the 26-year-old has started the previous two games for his country, and manager Dorival Junior was happy with his team’s performance.
“Overall, I think it was a good game, a well-played game,” he told Globo.
“Every point is important. It’s natural that the expectations created by what we did on the field may have meant that we deserved a better result. But I’m satisfied with our performance, proposing the game at all times, constantly looking for the opponent’s goal and playing a game that is in keeping with the characteristics of Brazilian football.”
The Brazilian media were impressed with Bruno, with Globo reporting that the midfielder ‘played well’ after a tough start to the evening.
They gave him a score of six, writing: “It took him a few minutes to find the best positioning at the edge of the box, but after that he played well. He had to work hard to occupy spaces in a defensive transition that overloaded the defensive midfielders. With the ball, he distributed passes well and created vertical actions.”
Elsewhere, Goal also gave him a six, praising his defensive contribution. However, they were less enthusiastic about his attacking efforts.
They wrote: “Always up for the defensive stuff, and flew into tackles with aplomb. Asking him to do much in creative terms is foolish, though.”
What is next for Bruno Guimaraes
Brazil’s next game is on Tuesday night, as they face Uruguay at home. Due to the time difference, that game will take place in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the United Kingdom, with the match starting at 12:45am GMT.
That will mean that Bruno is not back on Tyneside until the latter stages of next week. Fortunately for Newcastle United, their next Premier League fixture is not until Monday November 25th.
Newcastle face West Ham at St James’ Park that night, with the fixture being broadcast on Sky Sports.

While the scheduling is frustrating for West Ham fans travelling up from London on a Monday night, it does give Bruno more time to recover from his Brazilian exploits.
That is a boost for Eddie Howe, who will almost certainly name Bruno in his starting XI.
