Former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness believes Billy Gilmour should snub a loan move away from Chelsea this summer.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to St James’ Park, with the Northern Echo claiming the Magpies are keen on signing either him or Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea.

While there has been no mention of Abraham becoming available on a temporary deal, it’s been claimed that the Blues plan to loan out Gilmour.

Multiple clubs have been linked with the 20-year-old, who impressed during Scotland’s 0-0 draw with England last week.

Wolves and Rangers are reportedly keen, but it seems as though Gilmour’s most likely destination is Norwich.

According to the Athetlic, Gilmour is expected to join the Canaries on loan next week.

However, Souness believes that could be a mistake.

Souness doesn’t think Billy Gilmour should join anyone on loan

“I’d personally keep him at Chelsea,” Souness told Sky Sports News.

“I think Jorginho has to be looking over his shoulder. He’ll be challenging him more than anyone else.

“I look at Phil Foden at City and Pep didn’t let him go out on loan.”

Souness makes a good point about Gilmour. He’s clearly an incredibly talented player who is already capable of having an impact at Stamford Bridge.

Any side who signs him will be lucky to get him. However, they will also have to accept that it won’t be a long-term thing. Gilmour is destined to be a top player, and should have a big future at Stamford Bridge.

However, regardless of what Souness thinks, it seems likely that Gilmour will be leaving Chelsea temporarily.

And sadly, it doesn’t seem like Newcastle are close to securing his signature. Instead, they’ll have to look elsewhere.

That’s a real blow, as Gilmour would have slotted straight into our midfield and instantly improved our starting XI.

The Athletic claim the youngster is set to sign for Norwich, with Daniel Farke’s relationship with Thomas Tuchel playing a part.
