The Scotland international’s stock has been rising recently.

He produced a stunning performance against England at Euro 2020.

Arguably, he is one of the most promising young players in the Premier League.

Newcastle were said to be keen on bringing him in on loan (Northern Echo).

The Athletic say the 20-year-old is ‘likely’ to go to Carrow Road, though.

It is probably wise at this point for Newcastle to look at alternatives.

Here are three players the Magpies could target.

Conor Gallagher

Perhaps Newcastle ought to switch their attention to another of Chelsea’s young talents.

Conor Gallagher caught the eye on loan with West Bromwich Albion last season.

The 21-year-old made 30 appearances, which is decent experience, and scored a couple of goals.

While capable of holding, the energetic Gallagher is more box-to-box than Gilmour, suggesting he’d be a great loan addition.

Marko Grujic

Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic probably needs to start afresh elsewhere.

He signed for the Reds in 2016, but hasn’t had much of a look in and been loaned out to a few different clubs.

He’s a bit older than Gilmour and a bit more physical.

Grujic, who’s been linked with his last loan club Porto (Liverpool Echo), would potentially be a good signing for Newcastle and likely wouldn’t cost a fortune.

Oliver Skipp

Tottenham youngster Oliver Skipp could make for a decent alternative to Gilmour.

He’s already been where the Scot is reportedly heading, making 47 appearances for Norwich last season.

That experience in the Championship will have done wonders for his maturity.

Everything is up in the air with Spurs at the moment given their manager situation.

But if there is an incling Skipp will become available then Newcastle should test the waters.

iNews reported recently how he was a ‘standout’ for the Canaries last term.
