When Newcastle United fell behind against Brighton, it was difficult to fathom.
Eddie Howe‘s side had started the game brilliantly. Newcastle United were dominating possession and pressing high when they lost it, while they had just carved the Brighton defence wide open.
Sadly, Alexander Isak missed a perfect chance to give Newcastle the lead, with his one-on-one effort saved by Bart Verbruggen.
Moments later, Brighton took a quick free-kick. They picked out Danny Welbeck, who played a sharp one-two before scoring what proved to be the only goal of the game.
It was a lapse in concentration from a Newcastle United defence that had been untested up until that point.

Ben Foster states who is to blame for Brighton’s goal against Newcastle

It was a very disappointing goal to concede, and Ben Foster believes it came from an error by Fabian Schar.
The £3million defender tried to close Welbeck down, but was too late. The Seagulls played a one-two around Schar, while Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento were unable to get around on the cover in time to stop the goal.
Eddie Howe will have been fuming with the defending, and Foster has said on his YouTube channel that the blame lies at Schar’s door.
“It’s poor defending,” he said.
“He’s got drawn into something that he doesn’t need to get drawn into.
“He steps in. The second you step in, the ball has already been played in behind you. He isn’t getting back in time. It’s as simple as that. Welbeck’s too strong.”
Schar was not the only Newcastle United player to blame
It was poor defending from Schar, who is normally so reliable for Newcastle United. However, there were other issues at play.
Dan Burn’s positioning can also be questioned, as he was caught high up the pitch. One lofted pass ensured he was the wrong side of the ball and unable to influence the game.
It was also naïve from Newcastle, who could have made more of an attempt to slow the game down and stop Brighton taking a quick free-kick. Howe’s players clearly were not set for the game to restart, and Brighton took advantage of that.
It was such a cheap goal to concede, on a day when Brighton did not create too many chances. Nor did they need to, as they got the only goal that mattered.
The Magpies created enough chances to get back in the game, but were unable to find the net. Scoring goals is currently a problem, but there is belief inside Newcastle that will soon change.
