In the wake of Newcastle’s takeover, former striker Demba Ba joked with a fan about returning to the club.
One fan took Ba up on it and he had to clarify that he wasn’t being serious.
In another tweet, he said he was out of practice after his retirement.
Joking aside, another fan did ask whether Ba would consider returning to the club in another capacity.
The new owners are clearly trying to surround themselves with popular figures from its past, such as Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan.
Ba is not in the same league as those, but he is a popular figure among the fans.
He did appear to leave the door open to something like that – but any rumours he will be boosting the club’s firepower are jovial and seemingly nothing more.
Newcastle will be looking to improve the squad in January with quality players of the right age.
Before it gets to that stage, the identity of the manager and director of football is all-important.
They are two key appointments and perhaps the speed of the takeover has meant they haven’t had time to really draw up a concrete shortlist.
Getting that sorted is the priority, but perhaps Ba could return to the club in another capacity at some stage.
