According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United want a loan fee of £5million for Newcastle target Axel Tuanzebe.
The Magpies have been heavily linked with a move for the Red Devils defender, with the Telegraph recently claiming he could be Newcastle’s first signing of the summer.
That could still be the case, with Steve Bruce’s side yet to make a breakthrough in the transfer window. They remain the only Premier League club without a single signing.
Money is seemingly tight at St James’ Park, with Mike Ashley failing to open the purse-strings despite the Saudi takeover being put on hold once again.
That’s forced the club to look at loan deals and free transfers, but it looks like even a loan move for Tuanzebe won’t be cheap.
Reported Axel Tuanzebe loan fee is outrageous
£5million seems like an outrageous amount of money just to loan a player.
And it’s not like we’re taking Harry Maguire away from Manchester United – it’s Axel Tuanzebe.
The 23-year-old is slipping down the pecking order at Old Trafford, especially with the imminent arrival of Raphael Varane.
Tuanzebe needs to leave and get more first-team football, but Manchester United might be pricing him out of a move.
£5million would be a bargain signing for Newcastle, if it was a permanent deal. But £5million just to have him for a year seems very expensive.
Newcastle are reportedly still in pole position to sign Tuanzebe, but a fee of £5million seems like it could be an issue.
