‘Astonishing’: Callum Wilson on Newcastle’s form and Brentford clash

This weekend Newcastle United travel to London to face Brentford. Should the Magpies grab all three points, they will leapfrog over the Bees in the table. There’s possibly going to be some key players missing for the Toon. Callum Wilson has been injured since the 1-1 draw with Man Utd.

He spoke on the Footballer’s Football Podcast hosted by himself and West Ham’s Michail Antonio ahead of the game.

Wilson said: “It’s another team in and around us we drag down that little bit further.

“If we beat them then we overtake them in the league. Which is astonishing really, considering the start that they had and how everyone was writing us off and then all of a sudden you could be jumping over a team that’s been given all the plaudits in the world.”

Much like West Ham, Newcastle may have players missing against Brentford

Newcastle could be without Allan-Saint Maximin and Javier Manquillo who missed last week’s game. Ryan Fraser limped off at the Olympic Stadium, so could miss the game.

The club has issued updates on the three, they are hopeful they can make the squad. But much like the clash with the Hammers, they’ll just have to deal with the fact they have a weakened side.

They were able to secure a point thanks to a Joe Willock goal. Despite missing a few key players, the Magpies showed spirit and fight against a top side.

Newcastle will look to replicate that against Brentford. Maybe this time around they’ll be able to get all three points. With an opportunity to get ahead of the Bees in the league, it moves the Toon further away from the drop zone.

Eddie Howe’s first game in charge was against Brentford, so it will be interesting to see how far his side has come. They’re in a great run of form, but they’ll need to be wary of Thomas Frank’s side who are looking to turn around their poor run of games.
