Newcastle United have a five point advantage over Aston Villa in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

After Newcastle lost to Aston Villa, there were sudden concerns about the Magpies’ European aspirations. However, the landscape has changed once again.

Villa could not follow up their win over Eddie Howe’s side with another victory against Manchester City, while Newcastle beat Ipswich Town to move back up to third in the Premier League table.

Aston Villa object to Premier League fixture change

With four games left to play, there is a chance a change could be made to one of Aston Villa’s remaining fixtures.

They are scheduled to take on Tottenham Hotspur on May 18th, three days before the Europa League final.

Spurs are hoping they will be in that final, and have requested that their game against Villa is rearranged. Not only could that final end their trophy drought, but a win would result in Champions League qualification.

However, Sky Sports are reporting that Aston Villa have objected to Tottenham Hotspur’s proposal, telling the Premier League that a change in date would represent double standards.

If their game against Aston Villa were to be rearranged, it would have to be at an earlier date. The Premier League season is due to end on May 25th, with every club playing at the same time.

Newcastle United’s remaining fixtures

While one of Newcastle’s Champions League rivals could have their schedule tweaked at extremely short notice, the Magpies know what they have to do.

With four games remaining, their fate is in their own hands.

However, Newcastle’s remaining games are tough. They face Brighton and Arsenal away from home, plus home clashes with Chelsea and Everton.

It is the game against Chelsea that will likely be the most decisive. That is a clichéd six-pointer, with both sides battling to qualify for the Champions League.
