Newcastle United’s Premier League rivals Arsenal are set for a major change behind the scenes.

In the aftermath of Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Arsenal, it was announced that the Gunners would be looking for a new sporting director.

They confirmed on November 4th that Edu Gaspar would be stepping down from his role as Arsenal’s sporting director.

Of course, the Brazilian’s resignation had nothing to do with the loss at St James’ Park, but it was amusing for Newcastle United fans to see a major shakeup at the Emirates on the back of another defeat on Tyneside.

For Arsenal, they now need to do what Newcastle did over the summer. The Magpies appointed a new sporting director, with Paul Mitchell arriving as the replacement for Dan Ashworth.

It has been an up and down start to his tenure at Newcastle United, with Mitchell and Eddie Howe having issues at the start of their relationship. Arsenal will hope whoever arrives in North London does not have similar problems with their manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal are beginning their search for a new sporting director, and have reportedly identified a possible candidate.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are interested in Luis Campos.

The 60-year-old, who is being considered by the Gunners, earned a strong reputation for recruitment thanks to his work as a sporting director at Monaco and then Lille.

Campos is currently a football advisor at Paris Saint-Germain, and has overseen their change in approach to transfers. They are now targeting younger talent, having spent years squandering huge amounts of money on megastars.

The Portuguese transfer guru oversaw Monaco’s golden age of recruitment that saw them sign the likes of Bernardo Silva and Fabinho, while he also played a part in building the Lille team that won Ligue 1 in 2021.

Luis Campos was linked with Newcastle United

Campos would be a high profile appointment for Arsenal, and he is someone who was linked with Newcastle United shortly after PIF bought the club.

When the new owners arrived, it quickly emerged that they would be appointing a sporting director to help lead their project.

Dan Ashworth eventually got that job, but there were plenty of other names linked before he arrived from Brighton.

One of the biggest was Campos, with Sky Sports reporting in October 2021 that he would be interested in joining Newcastle United in some capacity.

But while Campos was keen on Newcastle, Toon officials went in another direction.

Now Campos could finally make his way to the Premier League, with Arsenal considering whether or not to make him Edu’s successor.
