Everton fans will be seething today seeing two of their own post positive comments on Anthony Gordon’s instagram after the way he left their club for Newcastle United at the turn of the year.
To say the relationship between Anthony Gordon and the Everton fans is fractured would be an understatement. The 22-year-old was literally chased out of Goodison Park at one point, and when he moved to Newcastle in January he didn’t do much to endear himself to the Toffees.
Implying that he single-handedly saved them from relegation in the 2021/22 season, turning his back on the club that nurtured and developed him after saying there was nowhere he’d rather be, etc. Then joining Newcastle of all teams, the clubs with whom they have the most manufactured rivalry in the Premier League. It was all a mess and it remains bitter to this day. (I do a podcast with an Evertonian and these were just some of his complaints about Gordon).
Newcastle are starting to see what Newcastle paid £45million for
While on the other side of the coin, Newcastle fans have embraced Gordon and are excited to see what he can bring next season after an admittedly slow start to life on Tyneside following his £45million move.
It’s always hard for January signings to hit the ground running and Gordon was coming from a messy situation at Everton and into a Newcastle side that was absolutely flying. It was always going to be tricky for him to break into the starting lineup, especially as he later admitted that his fitness was way off what is required at Newcastle.
Gordon has clearly been working hard and it’s now showing in his performances for England U21s as he’s been involved in three goals in his three starts at the U21s European Championship, picking up Player of the Match for his efforts yesterday.

Taking to Instagram to share the photo of him holding his POTM award, he captioned it “We’re not done yet” and in the comments were two of his former Everton teammates, Demarai Gray saying “makes sense” and Alex Iwobi who said “on God”. Two of the most popular players at Everton who may now be getting the side-eye from their own fans for interacting with Gordon.
I’m backing Gordon to have a fantastic season for Newcastle next term which will likely only upset the Evertonians even more – ‘look at what you could have had’, type of thing.
First things first for Gordon though, he has unfinished business with England in the Euros and with Isreal, who they’ve already defeated in the group stages, in the semi-final, things are looking good for Gordon and the Young Lions.
