Anthony Gordon has been very impressed with one of Newcastle United’s summer targets who they failed to sign last year.

Newcastle were looking to spend big once again and had hoped to add a top class attacking midfielder to their ranks but were beaten by one of their Premier League rivals.

Gordon has now responded to the star man on Instagram months after Newcastle’s failed attempts to bring him to St James’ Park.

Newcastle missed out on brilliant player last year

In what has been a tough year for Newcastle, they have often been criticised for lacking that attacking and creative spark coming from midfield and it’s cost them in some big games this season.

Newcastle had the chance to sign Leicester City star James Maddison for £40m back in the summer when the Foxes were relegated, but the 27-year-old preferred a move to capital and joined Tottenham.

Since his arrival in North London, Maddison has been a revelation when he has been fit and just showing exactly what Newcastle could have had if they had gone that extra mile to sign him.

While it’s likely that he always would have preferred a move down south, it’s still a difficult pill to swallow watching him impress for Tottenham week in week out and thinking what could have been at Newcastle.

On Instagram, Gordon simply responded to Maddison’s post with a fire emoji.

Geordies must be more ruthless in transfer windows

As Newcastle have now learned in previous transfer windows, nobody is ever going to do them a favour and they have to only ever be looking out for their own best interests.

Moving forwards they have to really go all out on the players who they think are going to really improve the squad next season and help them push back into the Champions League.

Missing out on Maddison aside, Newcastle have actually been quite good at not getting pulled into a bidding war especially with the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak which were relatively straightforward deals.

Newcastle are going to need at least one more star signing like that if they are to see real progress being made for their long-term ambitions of being an elite club.
