Newcastle United fans can breath a sigh of relief, as Thomas Tuchel is going to be the next England manager rather than Eddie Howe.

The speculation is set to come to an end, with Thomas Tuchel set to be announced as Gareth Southgate’s replacement.

It comes as quite a surprise, as it had recently felt as if Lee Carsley had the job in the bag.

But news broke on Tuesday that the FA were holding talks with Tuchel, and now the situation has advanced. He is going to be the next England manager, which is great news for Newcastle United fans that were fearful about Eddie Howe possibly getting the job.

He has been linked ever since the job became available, while Gary Neville recently told Howe he should push to get the England job.

However, it is going to be Tuchel instead of Howe – a German manager instead of an English manager.

The nationality is irrelevant, but Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is hopeful that the FA at least spoke to some English coaches during their search for Southgate’s successor.

But Shearer has told The Rest Is Football podcast that Howe was not spoken to about the England job, much to his surprise.

“It’s happened so quickly,” he said.

“We said the other day that there is perhaps a reason why Lee Carsley was ruling himself out. Maybe you were right in saying he knew something that we all didn’t know.

“I really hope that they have spoken to English managers.

“I’m told they didn’t speak to Eddie Howe, or they didn’t sound him out at all. I’m reliably told, which is a big surprise for me, considering he would be the outstanding English candidate.”

Eddie Howe happy to remain at Newcastle United

Shearer has been informed that the FA did not speak to Howe about becoming England manager.

However, it was recently reported that the FA did informally approach Howe’s representatives, only to discover that the Newcastle United manager is happy at St James’ Park.

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reinforced that message on Tuesday night, writing on X: “As revealed last week, the FA received no encouragement from Howe regarding England job. Matter was closed months ago as far as he was concerned despite talk elsewhere. Priority has always been staying at Newcastle. Glad the England talk can stop now.”

The rumours can now come to an end, which means Eddie Howe can fully focus on being the manager of Newcastle United. The England job is not going to lure him away, despite initial fears that it would.

The England speculation came at a time when there was unrest behind the scenes at St James’ Park, with Howe and Paul Mitchell not seeing eye to eye.

But Howe and Mitchell’s relationship is now improving, while the England job is going to someone else.
