During his six months as a Newcastle United player, Anthony Gordon has more chants than he has scored goals.

His one and only Newcastle strike came on the final day of last season, when we got the first real glimpse of what is to come from the 22-year-old. Meanwhile, he is cheered on by supporters to the tune of Seven Nation Army and Voulez-Vous.

Gordon made his Newcastle return on Tuesday night, playing the entire second half at Ibrox in the 2-1 win. It was an impressive performance from the youngster, who looks set to pick up where he left off.

The winger is full of confidence following his exploits with England, where he was named player of the tournament as the young Three Lions won the Under-21 European Championship.

It has been a great summer so far for Gordon, and it looks like it could carry on into next season. That is the hope for the £45million man, who is being inspired by the Toon Army everywhere he goes.

Anthony Gordon thanks ‘incredible’ Newcastle support

After the win against Rangers, Gordon spoke to NUFC TV. He was asked about the support he has received, particularly when he was away with the England Under-21s.

“It was incredible,” he said.

“I didn’t expect it, it’s something that you don’t expect. Obviously I was so focussed, I was trying to stay off socials and stuff but it still got through to me somehow.

“The fans are unbelievable. It’s something I’ve never experienced before. The support tonight, even when I warmed up – I’m really thankful for them.”

Big season ahead for AG8

The support while he was away with England was excellent, and it continued at Ibrox on Tuesday. He got a great ovation when he was warming up, and then put on a show for the travelling Toon supporters.

Gordon was Newcastle’s best player in the second half. He looked full of confidence and was a real danger. His direct running caused Rangers major problems, who could not handle his speed.

It came on the same day that Allan Saint-Maximin edged closer towards a move away from St James’ Park. That is a shame, but Gordon’s performance proved that there is life after ASM.

It is going to be a big season for Newcastle’s number eight, and he has started pre-season in confident fashion.

And the more he improves, the more chants he will get, and the louder they will become!
