Andy Cook reveals what Newcastle United players were saying before his ‘unbelievable’ Bradford goal

Bradford City star Andy Cook certainly enjoyed his goal at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, considering he is a boyhood Newcastle United fan.

Cook scored a brilliant volley as Newcastle United beat Bradford 4-1 in the Carabao Cup to progress into the fourth round.

The 34-year-old briefly put Eddie Howe’s side under a bit of pressure with his stunner, albeit the score was 3-0 at the time.

William Osula, however, would round off the scoring for the Magpies by bagging his brace during the closing stages of the game.

Still, it was a memorable moment for Cook and his family. After the game, he revealed what some of the Newcastle players were saying before his fine strike.

Andy Cook claims Newcastle United players were asking for a handball

The forward was speaking to BBC Sport West Yorkshire after the game.

He claimed he could hear some of the Newcastle players claiming for a handball when it initially found its way to him after Lewis Miley’s pass out from the back was cut out.

The forward turned and unleashed a venomous shot into the top corner and there was little Aaron Ramsdale could have done about it.

“It hit us and I saw a few of them claiming handball but….” he said.

“It just happened so fast, sat perfectly and I thought, ‘Do you know what? Hit it!’ I’ll be honest, when it hit the bar, I thought ‘Is it going in?’ Then it bounced down and hit the net – I was over the moon!”

Asked how it felt to score at St James’ Park, Cook said: “I was just buzzing. Obviously, I’m a centre-forward and I like to score goals. To get a goal at St James’ Park is just unbelievable.”

Andy Cook will be talking about his goal against Newcastle United for the ‘next 50 years’

Clearly, there will be an element of disappointment for Cook that his team exited the competition.

The Bantams are flying high in League One right now and had already beaten two Championship teams to get into the third round, so were arriving with confidence.

However, losing to the Carabao Cup holders is no great shame and at least there looks to be a strong chance of promotion to focus on this season.

It was certainly a memorable night for Cook and Bradford boss Graham Alexander believes he’ll be talking about his strike for years to come.

“He’s a proper lad, he’s been a big player for this club for the last three or four years and everyone knows about his support for Newcastle, but he’s also got a massive bond with our club as well, so it was a special night for Cooky just getting on the pitch,” he said (via The Argus).

“But that’s a goal he’ll be talking about for the next 50 years, I expect.”

Newcastle will play Tottenham in the fourth round of the competition.
