Bradford City striker Andy Cook scored a memorable goal in more ways than one on Wednesday night against Newcastle United.

Cook, who is the fourth-highest scorer in Bradford history, is a boyhood Newcastle United fan.

While Eddie Howe’s side were largely comfortable during Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Bradford in the Carabao Cup third-round, Cook certainly made an impact.

Indeed, the hosts at St James’ Park were absolutely cruising and had just gone into a 3-0 lead over the League One leaders following Joelinton’s second goal.

However, Cook – a prolific marksman in the Football League – pulled one back for the Bantams in stunning fashion.

There was little that goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale – or any other stopper in the world – could have done to prevent his volley from tearing into the back of the net.

Lewis Miley’s sloppy pass out from the back was intercepted by a Bradford player. The ball hit Cook, who swivelled and unleashed a thumping strike into the top corner.

The goal briefly put Newcastle under pressure until William Osula’s second of the game ensured safe progress into the fourth round of the competition.

Andy Cook had to give up tickets to the Carabao Cup final

It must have been an amazing moment for the 34-year-old and his family.

Cook, despite his recent success, hasn’t always had it easy. He began his career with Carlisle in 2009 but didn’t end up reaching the Football League until 2016.

Now a hugely important figure at Bradford, the tough times continued even after he made his big break.

Speaking to The Guardian earlier this week, Cook revealed that the ACL injury he suffered in January meant he had to give up tickets to the 2025 Carabao Cup final, which of course boyhood club Newcastle United won by beating Liverpool.

Talking about the prospect of playing the team he supports, Cook said: “I was having a laugh with my mates and I said if I was ever lucky enough to be on that pitch, I would come straight to the corner where our seats usually are and give it some.”
