Newcastle United’s Nick Woltemade has received the backing of Andy Cole after his Tyne-Wear derby disaster.
The striker had the worst afternoon imaginable at the Stadium of Light, scoring an own goal in Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United.
Even without his horrific header, Nick Woltemade was poor against Sunderland. He is suddenly enduring a difficult run of form after enjoying a hot start to life on Tyneside.
This is hopefully just a blip for the 23-year-old, who has certainly impressed former Newcastle United forward Andy Cole.
Who was Newcastle United’s most disappointing player vs Sunderland?

Andy Cole is a big fan of Nick Woltemade
In the aftermath of Newcastle’s loss to Sunderland, Cole has discussed Nick Woltemade’s impact in the North East so far on the Good, the Bad & the Football podcast.
The 54-year-old has admitted he is a fan of the giant German, praising him for his ‘impeccable’ technique.
“I like him,” he said.
“I really do like him. I think considering he wasn’t their number one choice.
“At the start, you’ve got to get your feet under the table. I think since then, for a big man, first touch is impeccable. You know, always looks to try and roll inside.
“Yeah, I like him.”

How Newcastle United fans can lift Nick Woltemade
Cole’s assessment of Newcastle’s most expensive signing is fair. He is outstanding technically, while he is a likeable player to watch when he is on form.
The problem is that his form has dipped, with Woltemade struggling from fatigue.
Now his confidence has taken a hit too, but there is a way for Newcastle United fans to change that.
On the back of the derby defeat, Newcastle supporters must shower Woltemade with love and support. He needs to be backed, rather than berated. The fallout from the Sunderland game could make or break him at St James’ Park, and it is vital that it is the former.
While the Newcastle United squad owe the supporters for what happened on Sunday, the supporters owe it to Woltemade to lift him up following a major low.
