Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll has delivered a warning to Paris Saint-Germain ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash at St James’ Park.
It is going to be a special night on Tyneside, as Newcastle play their first home game in the Champions League since 2003.
It is going to be an incredible occasion, and it will also see the Magpies take on the best player on the plant in Kylian Mbappe.
The stage is set for a brilliant game of football, and Newcastle will go into the match knowing that they can compete at Champions League level. They did it against AC Milan, valiantly winning a point in the San Siro.
But Newcastle were nervous in Italy, and had to do a lot of defending to ensure they did not concede. They were able to hold on, and go into tonight’s game with PSG with a point on the board.
The match with PSG will hopefully be different, and Carroll is expecting to see a much more expansive performance from Eddie Howe’s side.
Andy Carroll thinks Newcastle can get something on an ‘absolutely crazy’ night
Ahead of the game against PSG, Carroll has spoke to L’Equipe. He has explained why he thinks Newcastle can get a result against Luis Enrique’s side.
“Yes, they were a little tense for the return to the Champions League against Milan but will free themselves at St James’ Park, where the atmosphere will be absolutely crazy,” he said.
“I’m still in contact with players and members of the staff, I will send them messages of encouragement before the meeting.”
Less pressure on Newcastle against PSG
Hopefully Carroll, who now plays for Amiens in France, is right and Newcastle are less tense tonight. That should be the case, as they will be cheered on by a sold out St James’ Park that has been waiting for this moment for a long time.
Howe’s players were still finding their feet in the Champions League against AC Milan, and were understandably a bit overawed by the situaion.
But that should not happen against PSG. Newcastle are on home soil, and will have confidence that they can get a result despite the calibre of opposition.
And if they aren’t confident right now, they will be once they’ve received a message from Carroll before kickoff!
