Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has admitted that she was ‘staggered’ by the Toon supporters inside Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final, meaning the wait for a trophy goes on.

Sunday’s game was the club’s first final since 1999, and the first time that many supporters had seen Newcastle play at Wembley.

It was a day full of emotion, but it did not end in jubilation. Instead, the overriding feeling by the end of the day was one of pride. Getting to the final was a brilliant achievement, and the support over the weekend was incredible. You couldn’t go anywhere in London without bumping into a Newcastle fan.

Trafalgar Square on Saturday night was amazing, as were the scenes inside the ground. The flags were beautiful, both at the start and the end of the game. The noise was sensational too, but Newcastle fans were denied a moment of celebration. Manchester United were deserving winners, but the feeling is that this is only the start for Newcastle.

With ambitious owners, top class coaches, wonderful players and an unrivalled fanbase, we have every chance of returning to Wembley in the near future.

This weekend was just a taste, and Toon fans made the most of their trip down south.

Amanda Staveley ‘staggered’ by Newcastle’s support at Wembley

After the game, Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley spoke to TalkSPORT. She was asked how she felt about the number of supporters who made the journey to Wembley.

“Staggered,” she said.

“Really staggered. I was just in awe.

“I knew it would be amazing but I really feel bad because I so wanted a win, because I wanted them to have some silverware.

“But we will get there.”

Staveley hungry for more

Staveley was clearly moved by the Newcaste United support this weekend. But what did she expect? St James’ Park has been full every week since they bought the club, and the atmosphere has been amazing.

This was a first cup final since 1999, and the Toon Army travelled in their thousands. The support over the weekend was brilliant, and it’s just a shame that it didn’t end in celebration.

But the defeat has made Staveley even hungrier for success. She has spoke about Newcastle winning trophies in the future, and has even stated that the club ‘will win’ the Premier League and Champions League in the future.

That is quite the statement of intent, and she will be determined to make it happen after seeing the Newcastle supporters in all their glory this weekend.

Just imagine what it would have been like if we’d won…
