Ally McCoist has offered what his initial thoughts were on Joelinton after he picked up a thigh injury in Newcastle United’s win over Sunderland last week.
Joelinton could be ruled out for the remainder of this season as it looks like he’ll have to have surgery on his thigh, a huge blow to Newcastle.
McCoist was on commentary for the derby game and has now shared on talkSPORT how he feared the worst when he initially saw the Brazilian midfielder go down before half time at the Stadium of Light.
McCoist knew Joelinton’s injury was a bad one
There was a concern that Joelinton had suffered an injury when he first went down against Sunderland, but Eddie Howe decided to keep him on for the second half which suggested otherwise.
However, it’s now been revealed that this could have been a mistake as the 27-year-old faces a very lengthy spell out of the team if they are to go through with the operation.
This would leave Newcastle very short in midfield, something that’s been a huge problem all season, though they don’t really have the funds to solve it in January.
It didn’t appear to be too serious at first glance, though McCoist has suggested he immediately knew that it was going to be a bad one when the midfielder first went down.
On the show, Andy Townsend said: “That’s a blow isn’t it?”
McCoist added: “Oh, for the rest of the season? He must have torn his thigh.
“I saw it, I was there and it looked sore one on his thigh because he went down and then he knew right away. If he’s torn that, oh dear.”

Newcastle will have to wait until the summer to start over
This season feels like it’s just been one huge problem after another. Having Sandro Tonali suspended until August, Joe Willock missing most of the season, Nick Pope picking up a serious injury and now this to Joelinton.
Howe must be feeling like he can’t catch a break, but he at least still has the backing of the board who understand that it’s been very difficult to deal with added Champions League games as well as all of the injuries.
Unfortunately for Newcastle supporters, it doesn’t look like their bad luck is going to end any time soon and it may just be a case of riding the storm out until the summer when players will return and they can make wholesale changes in the transfer window for a fresh start.
