Ally McCoist was left in absolute disbelief after PSG were awarded a last minute penalty against Newcastle United for a Tino Livramento handball.
Newcastle’s threadbare squad had worked extremely hard all night to preserve their 1-0 lead before PSG were handed a 95th minute penalty due to what VAR deemed to be a handball by Livramento who was having a brilliant game.
McCoist was commentating on TNT Sports and was absolutely shocked to see the penalty awarded, claiming that Newcastle had been robbed of a crucial three points.
McCoist shocked at PSG penalty decision vs Newcastle
Prior to this penalty being given, VAR had previously checked a similar situation in which the ball had rolled up the leg of Lewis Miley before brushing his arm, though VAR felt this was not enough to give a spot kick.
At the end of the game, however, they would then award a penalty to PSG after the ball had been kicked hard off the chest of Livramento and then bounced onto his elbow.
There was really nothing Livramento could have done given the speed the ball was kicked at and it now leaves Newcastle in a tricky position while PSG earned a crucial late point.
It was a certainly very strange decision considering how referee Szymon Marciniak had officiated the game prior to that incident, but it’s something that Newcastle now have to get on with and try not to dwell on too much.
McCoist was very disappointed to see the penalty given and made it very clear how much he disagreed with the decision.
On commentary, McCoist said: “It’s bordering on a robbery. If I was playing I’d have a real feeling of injustice.
“It comes off Tino Livramento’s chest and hits his elbow. That is absolutely never a penalty. If we’re giving a penalty for that, then it is a disgrace.”

Newcastle still in with a chance
Had VAR deemed it not to be a penalty against Livramento, Newcastle would have left PSG with all three points and in a very strong position to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League.
However, this equaliser from Kylian Mbappe means that Newcastle now sit third in Group F and need to beat AC Milan at St James’ Park and hope that Dortmund avoid defeat to PSG in order to finish second.
If they draw to Milan then they will have at least earned themselves a spot in the Europa League in the round of 32, though all eyes will be on the top prize for Eddie Howe and his men.
