Ally McCoist admits he was shocked by how fast £45m Newcastle player was

If you had to pick one word to describe Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon it would be “blonde”, if you could pick two the other would be “rapid” but it seems Ally McCoist wasn’t aware.

Speaking on talkSPORT this morning Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist were talking about Newcastle‘s Anthony Gordon with both saying how good he is looking this season.

In his praise of Gordon, Ally McCoist admitted he was shocked by his pace while saying he looks like he’s enjoying his football at Newcastle.

McCoist has been very impressed with Gordon this season

“I thought he was excellent although they ended up getting beat off Liverpool,” said McCoist. “He looks as though he’s really enjoying his football. It looks as though there’s been a pressure lifted off him and he’s just getting on with it. I didn’t realise he was so quick by the way, I know he’s a good player but he’s very very quick as well. But you’re right he looks as though he’s seriously enjoying his football right now.”

Gordon has improved massively since he arrived for £45million from Everton in January when he has since admitted he was way off the pace.

Speaking at the end of the last campaign Gordon said he was shocked at the levels Eddie Howe expects from his players and he wasn’t quite prepared for it.

He has since put the work in and, despite representing England Under 21‘s at the Euros, taking them all the way to lifting the trophy and scooping the Player of the Tournament award, Gordon gave himself very little time off over the summer.

The 22-year-old returned to training early and that commitment and drive is paying off well for him. He’s been probably Newcastle’s most consistent performer so far this season, if he can just get his finishing dialed in, he’s going to be a huge part of Newcastle’s season.

There have been glimpses of what he can do in the past, but now Newcastle are starting to see that brilliance on a more consistent basis making that £45million price tag look like a bargain.
