Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin has given fans an update on his fitness as he continues his rehabilitation from the injury that ruled him out against West Ham.

The Frenchman missed the 1-1 draw against David Moyes’ side on Saturday, which was the first Premier League game this season that the 24-year-old didn’t play a part in.

However, according to the Chronicle, Newcastle’s number 10 is expected back in the Toon squad this weekend for the crucial clash against Brentford.

A win against Thomas Frank’s side would see Eddie Howe’s men leapfrog the Bees in the table, as well as having two games in hand on the promoted side.

The former Bournemouth manager’s first game in charge of the Magpies came against Brentford, but he couldn’t be in the dugout after testing positive for Covid-19.

Saint-Maximin rescued a point for his new boss that day in the 3-3 draw, and the former Nice man could terrorise a Brentford side that has one point from their last seven Premier League games, if he is passed fit.

Saint-Maximin, who has five goals and three assists to his name this season, has shared snippets of the work he is undertaking to return to fitness on his Instagram account.

Saint-Maximin is putting in the work off the pitch, after a calf problem kept him out last weekend.

As crucial as it is to have the French under-21 international back against Brentford, Howe won’t want to take any risks.

With Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier facing long periods on the sidelines, Newcastle cannot afford to rush Saint-Maximin’s return.

As much as this update is positive, there needs to be an element of caution considered when Howe and his staff decide whether to bring our prized straight back in against Brentford.
