Alexander Isak has been absolutely flying for Newcastle United for two seasons now.
Isak is undoubtedly Newcastle United’s most important player and even despite the ongoing excellence of Tino Livramento, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, the Sweden striker just has few positional rivals in world football right now.
Indeed, Isak made history by becoming the first Newcastle player to score 20 Premier League goals in successive seasons by netting the opener against Brentford on Wednesday night.
Surely the best striker the club have had since the legendary Alan Shearer, it’s incredible to think what the 25-year-old might achieve in his career.
Should the former Real Sociedad star stay at St James’ Park long-term, the sky really is the limit. Already a Carabao Cup winner, it would be foolish to bet against him winning more trophies at Newcastle providing he stays.
Isak is under contract at Newcastle until 2028 and despite so much talk about his future, the forward has given no outward indication he’s actively looking to leave.
Still, asked about potentially catching up with Shearer’s record at Newcastle, Isak took umbrage.

Alexander Isak reacts to “disrespectful” question about Newcastle legend Alan Shearer
Speaking to The Chronicle after the win over Brentford, Isak was asked if he could one day overtake Shearer as Newcastle’s all-time leading goal scorer.
The Geordie legend scored 148 Premier League goals for Newcastle and 206 in total across a ten-year spell between 1996 and 2006.
Isak is currently on 59 goals in 101 appearances across all competitions for the club but gave short shrift to a question about overtaking Shearer.
“I think it is a bit disrespectful to him to talk about that,” he said.
“It is so far away. I think my goalscoring record has been good so far. But I don’t really look too far forward.
“I just try to stay in the moment. That has always been the best way for me to keep my form. That’s what will keep me scoring.”
Asked about his future more generally, Isak said: “I don’t focus on my future – I focus on my job. Now is the worst time to think about anything else. All our focus is on Newcastle right now.”
Is Alexander Isak injured for Newcastle?
The striker would surely fancy his chances of adding to his tally when Eddie Howe’s side head to Leicester on Monday night, with the Foxes struggling for any kind of form right now.
Still, it remains to be seen if the Sweden star will actually feature.
Isak is a slight doubt for Newcastle against Leicester after coming off with a groin complaint during the Brentford game.
With all due respect to Leicester, Newcastle will be expected to win rather comfortably. With that in mind, it would hardly be a surprise to see him rested ahead of the Manchester United clash later that week.
