Alexander Isak made Newcastle United history with second goal against Tottenham on Sunday

Newcastle United’s record signing Alexander Isak bagged himself a brace against Tottenham at St James’ Park taking him to 10 goals for the season.

The £63million signing from Real Sociedad has missed a lot of football this season for Newcastle due to injury, but he has the second best minutes per goal ratio in the Premier League behind the inhuman Erling Haaland.

Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson are tied at the top of Newcastle’s scoring charts with 11 goals each and now Isak is just one behind them which marks the first time that Newcastle have had three players score 10 or more goals in a Premier League season.

That’s a stat that blew my mind when I think about some of the players we’ve had at St James’ Park over the years: Andy Cole, Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, Peter Beardsley and those are just the ones from when I was a kid.

We’ve had some amazing strikers who bagged many goals in the famous black and white but it seems that we only ever had one at a time, two at most.

It seems the days of the 20 plus goals a season striker at Newcastle are over and we now share the wealth. Although, if Isak’s minutes per goal ratio can apply over a full season of games then he can go on to hit 30 in a season for the Magpies for the first time since Alan Shearer.

Isak has what it takes to become a Newcastle legend

There honestly couldn’t have been a more worthy player in than Isak to break that record for Newcastle. His goalscoring prowess this season has been amazing. 10 goals in 15 Premier League games just shows what an unbelievable talent we have on our hands.

Every time he picks up the ball near the goal it feels like he’s going to score. He’s so comfortable with the ball at his feet, he can turn defenders inside out, he’s calm under pressure. At this point it’s hard to identify a weakness in his game. Even better is that he’s only 23 and has so many years ahead of him with room to improve too.

It has been said many times before but with Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman in our side we’ve got one of, if not the best young spines of a team in the Premier League. Now we just need to add a few players with similar levels of quality around them to become true contenders.
