Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been asked if Eddie Howe could become the next Manchester United manager.

The Red Devils are currently on the lookout for a new boss, with Erik ten Hag losing his job at Old Trafford on the back of Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United.

The writing has been on the wall for a long time. It was even reported back in May that Man United were going to sack Ten Hag after the FA Cup final. However, that plan was scrapped after they won at Wembley. There was also the added issue of not having a replacement lined up.

But now they are trying to find a new manager, as Dan Ashworth aims to identify the man to make Manchester United great again.

What about Eddie Howe? That question was put to Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, as he reacted to Man United sacking Ten Hag on The Rest Is Football podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Micah Richards.

“No, Eddie’s at a big club,” he said.

“I’m joking Man United fans, I’m joking.”

Alan Shearer loves poking fun at Manchester United

Newcastle fans will love Shearer’s response to Eddie Howe possibly leaving St James’ Park and becoming Man United boss.

The Magpies’ record scorer never turns down an opportunity to poke fun at the Red Devils, having turned down the chance to sign for them twice during his career.

Shearer recently said he would rather take up golf than choose between playing for Sunderland or Man United.

Eddie Howe is committed to Newcastle United

While Shearer is obviously having a joke at the expense of Man United, Newcastle United fans probably do not need to worry about Eddie Howe heading to Old Trafford.

It was recently reported that Man United could target Howe, but that feels unlikely in the aftermath of Ten Hag’s sacking.

The Newcastle United manager is not one of the names that is being linked with the Man United job, with Thomas Frank and Xavi two of the rumoured contenders.

It was recently reported that Howe is committed to being Newcastle manager, as the FA opted against a formal approach to make him the next England boss.
