Newcastle United fans far and wide have been celebrating the ambitious plan launched by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust. And Alan Shearer is no different.

On Thursday morning, NUST announced their plans to buy a stake in Newcastle United when Mike Ashley sells the club.

They hope to raise a minimum of £3million, with the intention of owning at least 1% of the club.

This is not a takeover attempt, nor are they looking to work alongside Ashley. Instead, they are looking for a share in the club when it is eventually sold.

That could be this summer, or it could be in a few years. This is a long-term project.

Shortly after the news broke, fans hailed the ambition of the group, while multiple people began to make pledges.

Fans can either make a one off payment, or add to the fund monthly. And if their attempt to buy a stake in the club is unsuccessful, any money raised will be donated to north east charities.

It is a fantastic initiative, and one that has now been backed by the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Shearer simply said: ‘Well done. I’m in.”

Receiving praise from a club legend like Shearer will certainly boost NUST’s credibility, as they look to raise enough money to ensure the fans have a say in the club’s future.
