Newcastle United should be very interested in what Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have just said.
While the Magpies’ current priority is qualifying for the Champions League, they will also be looking towards the summer transfer market.
Newcastle want at least three signings, with a centre-back, winger and goalkeeper on the club’s radar.
It is extremely clear that Newcastle need more depth, especially with European football returning to St James’ Park.

Micah Richards and Alan Shearer debate James McAtee’s future
One player who is on Newcastle’s radar is James McAtee.
He was linked with a move to Tyneside in January, and Newcastle remain interested in McAtee ahead of the summer.
The 22-year-old could be a shrewd addition, capable of playing out wide or as a centre-midfielder. That is the type of versatility that Eddie Howe appreciates.
He is someone who Micah Richards has high hopes for, believing that he is one of few players that have improved at Manchester City this season.
Richards spoke about McAtee on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, before Alan Shearer stated that he needs a move away from the Etihad Stadium.
“You know who is not a bad shout, McAtee,” Richards said.
“McAtee is a good player. I don’t know if he’s ready to start for Man City week in week out.”
Shearer interrupted: “He’s not getting in their team. He’s another one that is going to have to leave.”
Richards added: “I’m telling you now. He’s not probably the same level as Cole Palmer, but McAtee will go somewhere and he will light it up. He will light it up. He’s got something special.”
Before they could debate where McAtee could go, Gary Lineker quipped: “We’ll take him at Leicester!”
Where James McAtee would fit in at Newcastle United
Newcastle United desperately need more strength in depth.
McAtee could provide that, as he can operate in more than one position.
When it comes to signing a right winger, Bryan Mbeumo is Newcastle’s top target. He would be a dream addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.
While McAtee would not arrive as a starting winger, his ability to play centrally could be what makes him more appealing.
That is because Sean Longstaff could leave Newcastle this summer. He will be entering the final 12 months of his contract, and has fallen out of favour in recent months.
There are also question marks surrounding Joe Willock, who is struggling for form as of late.
McAtee would give Howe a different option in the middle of the park, while he could provide cover out wide too.
However, the Magpies will face a lot of competition for his signature. The likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Nottingham Forest are linked with McAtee.
