Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is already liking what he sees from one of the club’s summer signings.
It was a difficult summer transfer window for Newcastle United, with the news cycle constantly dominated by the toxic Alexander Isak saga.
Still, the club ended it in reasonably positive fashion. Newcastle made six major summer signings in 2025, which significantly strengthened the squad.
Eddie Howe is yet to see the full benefit of Newcastle’s transfer business, too.
Indeed, Yoane Wissa will not make his debut for the club before November following a knee injury, while fellow new arrival Jacob Ramsey is only just returning from an ankle injury.
Anthony Elanga impressed for Newcastle in midweek, but it is a certain Nick Woltemade who has left Shearer impressed.

Alan Shearer hails Newcastle United star Nick Woltemade
Newcastle smashed their transfer record to sign Woltemade, which has attracted criticism from Bayern Munich.
The Bavarian giants wanted to sign the forward from Stuttgart but missed out and have subsequently poked fun at Newcastle for paying what could eventually turn out to be £69million.
Luckily for Howe, the 23-year-old is doing his talking on the pitch. Already this season, he’s scored three goals in six games.
As such, Newcastle United legend Shearer has been very impressed.
“Very, very impressive start,” he told Sky Sports.
“With the price tag, with the pressure, I would think he’s very, very satisfied and very happy with the way things are going.
“I think the fans are. They’ve liked what they’ve seen.
“Improvement can be made, absolutely. I’m sure that Eddie [Howe] will do that with him but, yeah, he’s made a brilliant start.”
Nick Woltemade’s record-breaking start to Newcastle United career explained
Shearer, of course, is Newcastle’s greatest-ever striker and if Woltemade scores even half the goals he did, then the club really are onto a winner.
There’s a long way to go on that front and it’s important not to put too much pressure on what is a relatively inexperienced player.
Still, the forward is already making history at St James’ Park.
Indeed, on Wednesday, Woltemade became the first Newcastle player to score on both his Premier League and Champions League debuts for the club.
Given all the noise about his price tag, that is quite the way to introduce yourself to the Geordie faithful.
