Alan Shearer says Alexander Isak has been ‘unlucky’ as Newcastle United claim made

Whatever happens on the final day of the campaign, it’s clear that Alexander Isak has been brilliant for Newcastle United this season. 

Isak has scored 27 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions and it was his strike that won Newcastle United their first major domestic honour in 70 years. 

Indeed, the 25-year-old scored the winning goal at Wembley as Newcastle won the Carabao Cup. Although a recent injury has slowed his progress somewhat, he’s largely been in exceptional form throughout. Isak has been hailed as “world class” this season, and it would be difficult for anyone to argue with that.

Still, even after this most glorious of campaigns for the Sweden international, club legend Alan Shearer thinks he’s been unlucky.

Alan Shearer reveals why Alexander Isak has been unlucky this season  

The Newcastle United legend unsurprisingly selected Isak in his Premier League Team of the Season. 

Isak led the line in Shearer’s selection and was flanked by Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as well as Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

Shearer thinks Isak has frankly just been unlucky not to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

Salah leads Isak by five goals heading into the final day of the season and will win the award unless something utterly remarkable happens on the final day.

Shearer said it is simply bad luck that Isak ran into Salah, an all-time Premier League great, during one of the most prolific seasons of his career.

Writing for the Premier League’s official website, Shearer said of Isak: “One of the best No 9s in Europe.  

“He’s had a fantastic season, but he’s just unlucky that Salah has been so phenomenal, as 23 goals would be enough to win him the Golden Boot in some seasons. Chris Wood and Yoane Wissa have also impressed throughout the campaign, so they deserve a mention here too.”

Eddie Howe’s side need to win their final game of the season to ensure they are playing Champions League football next time out. 

The Magpies host Everton on Sunday and will need the support of fans inside St James’ Park to get over the line.  

They will also no doubt need their star striker available. Isak missed Newcastle’s loss to Arsenal with a thigh injury, sparking fears about his availability for Sunday’s game. 

However, the Daily Telegraph have suggested that Isak will be fit for Newcastle against Everton.  

That would be a huge boost to everyone involved at the club. If he does indeed play, perhaps he’ll add to his tally of 23 Premier League goals.
