Alan Shearer was really impressed with something that one Newcastle United man did against Wolves in the 3-0 victory yesterday.

Newcastle took home a much needed three points against an in-form Wolves side who had actually climbed above them in the Premier League after last week’s heavy defeat to Arsenal.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer was very impressed with Jacob Murphy’s delivery into the box which helped to create the second goal fired home by Anthony Gordon.

Shearer impressed with ‘incredible’ pass for Newcastle’s second

Newcastle felt really in control of the game after their opening goal which was scored by Alexander Isak, and when the second went in it was almost as if the three points were already wrapped up in the first half.

Sitting a little bit deeper than usual, Newcastle used their pace to full effect against Wolves as they worked hard to win the ball back and counter attack to the best of their ability.

It was Joe Willock who found space in the midfield before laying it off to Jacob Murphy to whip a ball into the box which the goalkeeper failed to deal with and Gordon had a tap-in to score his ninth goal of the season.

Shearer was really pleased with how Newcastle had played overall in the game, but it was this play in particular which caught his eye as they dominated a quality Wolves team.

On the show, Shearer said: “That’s an incredible ball from Jacob Murphy, a mistake from the goalkeeper and Gordon gets his goal.”

Newcastle change things up against Wolves

After a run of difficult results, Eddie Howe was keen to change things up on Saturday to try and give the defence a bit more protection after they had been conceding goals for fun in the last couple of months.

Newcastle’s midfield had often left the defenders very exposed in recent games and so they were instructed to sit a little bit deeper against Wolves and wait for the opportunity to present itself.

This is exactly what so many teams have done to Newcastle and the Magpies have struggled to deal with it in the past, but it looked to work a treat for them in yesterday’s game.

The win pushes them back up into eight as they continue their hunt for a European push and this change in tactic may have given them that confidence boost that they very much needed.
